Assuming that the band actually sucks, that would make it almost criminal :). 2) very interesting. Has anyone ever done this with CD's, DVD's, LP's or any other media? Did anyone ever go out and buy 100000 copies or so of their own CD to get in the charts? Maybe this even shows that musicians are getting too large of a portion of the proceeds of each song sold through iTunes (just kidding). 3) The chances of the band actually getting a contract and people buying their songs is probably still very remote.
