Wrong Nintendo, wrong!

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

I don’t think I have to say how much I adore the DS. Hardly a secret. When my trusty white ‘netbook’ bit the digital dust (see twitpic) I went out and bought a new one right away…

But Nintendo made a mistake… When Nina had to be replaced, I didn’t go for the new fangled DSi, instead I bought another DS Lite.

The DSI just doesn’t have it. Sure it has a bigger (brighter) screen. Sure it has two built in cameras (but why would I need two?). Sure you can download games now… Big whoop! The new DS just doesn’t, feature wise, justify the extra cost. Mario plays just fine on the screen of the DS Lite. Hell I am used to browsing the web on a Blackberry screen…

Nintendo made this boob-job before. the Ds Lite was functionally no different from the original, it just looked more like an iPod. They did it again. The DSi adds nothing substantial to the experience. After having won over so many people by making a device that appealed to so many more people than just die hard gamers and pre-teen girls, they went back to catering exactly to the latter. Nintendo worked real hard to shake the kiddie image… they had a lot of help from fanboys like myself. And now they are going straight back to that space by adding features that nobody needs, and in the process they are charging a gob more cashitos. Not to mention this:

“DSi software (software that is only compatible with DSi) is region locked, eg: European DSi software can only be played on European DSi consoles,” a Nintendo spokesperson said. So I buy a DSi in the US, go on vacation to Europe and can’t play the games my friends there bought? Nintendo goes on to say that non-DS- specific games are not region coded and everything I already own for my DS works fine on the DSi. Uh… NO! In Nintendo’s infinite wisdom they decided to remove from the DSi, the GBA (Game Boy Advance) game slot. Well there goes Guitar Hero, which uses the GBA slot to install the grip needed to play that game!

Yes they gave the DSi more memory, the ability to play MP3/AAC, but I already own a phone that is perfectly capable of doing so and has a better built-in camera… The question is, when will Nintendo allow me to make phone calls with the DS?
